Interview Posted on National Portrait Gallery blog, 2014

I am honored to be included on The National Portrait Gallery's blog, Face2Face: Portrait of an Artist, which consists of interviews with artists from the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition (closing Feb 23). Bo Bartlett, Leslie Adams, Beverly McIver, Ray diCapua, David Jon Kassan, the late Martha Mayer Erlebacher (a video), Edgar Jerrins, Kumi Yamashita, first prize winner Bo Gehring, and many more offer insight into their sources for ideas and the story of their work.

Outwin-Boochever Portrait Competition Closing, February 23, 2014

The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, which has been on view at the National Portrait Gallery in D.C. for 11 months, will be closing February 23. It is an unusual and provocative show of wonderful portraits and I am honored that my painting "Legacy: Portrait of Val" is there. I hope all who have been interested in seeing it get a chance to do so this month.

Finalist, Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, National Portrait Gallery,March 23, 2013 - February 23, 2014

I am so happy to announce that my painting, "Legacy: Portrait of Val" is a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and will be included in the OBPC exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington D.C. The show runs a full 11 months, March 23, 2013 - February 23, 2014. Please come and enjoy this magnificent museum and, to judge from the 2006 and 2009 interations of this competition, it will be very audience-friendly and full of amazingly competent and sympathetic work.

The museum's permanent collection is full of wonderful art about notable personages throughout the history of our country. I am honored to have my work hang in the National Portrait Gallery among all the wonderful and historical images that I love and learn from.

An 80-page publication illustrating each of the 48 finalists’ works will be available in the museum store Saturday, March 23. It includes an essay by Mary Sheriff, the W.R. Kenan, Jr. distinguished Professor of Art History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Tour the exhibition, listen to interviews, get inside information, and vote for your favorite portrait for the People's Choice Award with the OBPC mobile app! Available for iOS and Android. Download the app at npg.si.edu/app.

CIVA SEEN Journal "Face to Face": An Exploration of the Portrait

This spring Crystal Downing, Distinguished Professor in English and Film Studies at Messiah College, wrote a very nice article about me and my work which was published in CIVA Seen, XII:1 2012 "Face to Face" issue, P. 2. The article is called "Catherine Prescott: Behind the Face".

In the same issue I reviewed Robert A. Sobieszek's terrific book, Ghost in the Shell: Photography and the Human Soul, 1850-2000, about a very influential exhibit of the same name at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, published by the museum and MIT press, 1999. I highly recommend it for anyone working in art about human expression, psychology, narrative, emotional content, and yes, just plain humanness.

If you would like to get a copy of the Journal, it is free for CIVA members and available for purchase here

Twelve of us then spent a week together on Sullivan's Island just off the coast of Charleston. That group, now 13, will be exhibiting together in Alexandria, VA at the Principle Gallery in April 2012. All of us will be showing portraits, landscapes and still lifes that come out of our shared experience painting together that week. One of the women, Katherine Stone, is the subject of my painting "Northern Interior." You can see her paintings at katestoneart.com.
